FREESTYLE MIX

Freestyle aka Latin Freestyle/Latin Hip-Hop music is a form of electronic music. Second-generation Latin Americans from the New York metropolitan areas with the help of their Italian neighbors birthed the genre in the 1980s. Due to the decline of disco and the rise of hip-hop, Dominicans & Puerto Ricans saw an opportunity to share their own cultural identity with the country. Influenced by dance music, pop artists, and hip-hop, Freestyle is primarily composed of Latin rhythm beats. This new genre made its way to other Latin American communities across the country including Cubans in Miami and Mexicans in Los Angeles and Houston.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles and was fortunate to experience the end of the freestyle wave in the 90s. It was a popular genre with Spanish-speaking youth who threw ditching parties/house parties/backyard parties. It has been a critical part of my life and many others who grew up as second/third-generation Latin Americans. There hasn’t been one week in my life where I don’t hear this style of music. Freestyle music revolves around love and heartbreak and includes mixtures of English & Spanish lyrics.

Head Over Heels is my love letter to the music that has influenced my life.
